Introducing a New Way to Address Unsafe Structures

Monticello, NY – Is there an abandoned or unsafe structure in your community that needs to be removed?

The Sullivan County Division of Planning and Community Development is now accepting applications for the new Removing Unsafe Structures (RUSt) Program, as $75,000 has been made available to reimburse tipping fees and disposal costs for municipalities who are demolishing vacant or abandoned buildings. The program aims to clean up unsafe structures primarily in the County’s urban centers and community gateways. Properties which show promise for redevelopment and reuse will be prioritized.

“It’s time for the County to put its best foot forward, and to do that, we must clean up our communities’ dilapidated, unsafe buildings,” explained District 9 Legislator Alan Sorensen, chair of the Legislature’s Planning Committee. “That’s why the County stands ready to offer significant funding toward this important effort.”

Administered by the Division of Planning and Community Development, the program guidelines and application form are available here. Applicants may request up to $18,000 per property, but applications must be received by 4 p.m. on August 10.

Applicants are encouraged to discuss any projects with the Division prior to applying. Staff is available during normal business hours to answer questions and to assist municipalities with project development and applications.
