Newly Discovered History to be Revealed in One-Room Schoolhouse Presentation

One-Room Schoolhouse Historical Marker

Hurleyville, NY – Gordon McAdam will talk about the “One-Room Schoolhouses in the Town of Thompson” on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 6 p.m. at the Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville.

Of special interest will be the recently discovered information about the lease agreement for the Columbia Hill one-room schoolhouse.

Gordon and his brother Henry have identified and researched 20 one-room schoolhouses across the Town of Thompson that were in existence between 1830 and 1950. The committee who assisted in this endeavor consists of Town of Thompson Historian Al Wolkoff, Judy Wolkoff, Mary Ann Drobysh Berens, Paul Lounsbury, and Jack Spangeberg.

Some of their research was completed in the archives of the Sullivan County Historical Society. It was through the Society that Gordon McAdam learned of the Pomeroy Foundation, which provides grants for historical markers. The Town of Thompson Schoolhouse Project was awarded such a grant to place an historical marker at each of the 20 sites.
