Hurleyville, NY – When Mickey Barnett (a longtime Catskills resort performer and Rock-a Billy Hall of Fame member) suggested Sullivan County bring a doo-wop band to the Museum’s First Sunday Music and History program, organizers wondered, “What does doo-wop have to do with Sullivan County history?”
Well, according to Barnett, there were doo-wop bands playing all over the County back in the resort heydays. Who knew!
That timeless music returns this November 3 at 2 p.m. at the Museum, thanks to Cherished Memories, a group of guys and one gal keeping doo-wop music alive. With tight vocal harmonies, their nostalgic a cappella renditions of songs like “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” and “Blue Moon” take listeners on a journey back to the sounds of street-corner harmony.
Members Charlie, Joe, Jeff, Nancy and John perform throughout the metropolitan area at a variety of nightclubs, restaurants, oldies shows and every type of private, public and corporate function. You can find them on Facebook and on the Hudson Valley Music website, www.hvmusic.com.
The Americana band Little Sparrow will host the November 3 event, which is free (donations gratefully accepted). The program is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.
