Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling staff and technicians from Care Environmental Corporation collected over 7,260 total pounds (3.63 tons!) of unwanted toxic substances from household generators in Sullivan County at the first of two Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection events on June 17.
Residents turned out in a steady stream of vehicles over a four-hour period to have their hazardous materials systematically processed for recovery or proper disposal. Over 1,000 gallons of liquids and hundreds of pounds of hazardous solids were accepted. This included fluorescent lamps, automotive batteries, banned organophosphate pesticides, solvents, even a bottle of cyanide and 22 pounds of liquid mercury!
Improperly discarded hazardous waste is dangerous to people and the environment. But if you missed this cleanup event, don’t fear: the Department of Solid Waste and Recycling will be holding a second no-cost HHW collection event for Sullivan County households on Sunday, July 23. Sullivan County has graciously received matching grant funds from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to help defray the cost of these collection events.
