'Holiday Hunt' Coming Next Week

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County will be part of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) new Holiday Deer Hunt between December 26, 2021 and January 1, 2022.

Earlier this year, the Sullivan County Legislature unanimously agreed not to participate in the “Holiday Hunt,” a recently-authorized late bow and muzzleloading season for deer, due to concerns that it would interfere with snowmobiling activities and small game hunting, would result in pregnant does being harvested, and would stress deer already tired from nearly three months of hunting.

However, the DEC informed the County this month that the State legislation allowing counties to opt out of the Holiday Hunt has not yet been passed, so all counties, including Sullivan, remain required to allow bow and muzzleloading hunting during that last week of this year.
