White Lake, NY – Sullivan County International Airport is receiving $18.5 million from the State to significantly renovate and expand the John “J.J.” McGough Terminal.
“This is another step in this administration’s commitment to making the Airport attractive and a viable asset for the future growth of the County,” remarked Legislature Chairman Robert A. Doherty.
“The Airport is an incredible resource for Sullivan County, and aviation businesses, pilots and the public are taking notice of the investments we’re making,” noted District 7 Legislator Joe Perrello, who chaired the Legislature’s Public Works Committee when these monies were applied for in 2021. “This is a hidden treasure, and we want more people stopping to see what it offers – for lunch, for fuel, for tourism.”
NYS Governor Kathy Hochul announced the grant yesterday as part of a larger reveal of $230 million in awards to nine airports through the State’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.
“Our upstate airports are our gateways to local economies and make lasting impressions, connecting New Yorkers and tourists to the beautiful destinations that the Empire State has to offer,” Governor Hochul said. “By making critical investments to further modernize facilities across upstate New York, we are lifting upstate airports to new heights and providing a 21st century transportation experience that travelers expect and deserve.”
Sullivan’s $18.5 million share of that $230 million will go towards a complete reimagining of the Airport’s 53-year-old terminal, creating additional space for passengers, a new pilot lounge, and better views of the surrounding Catskill Mountains environment. The project will also upgrade the airport’s HVAC systems and outfit the terminal building with improved insulation, along with solar panels that will provide a sustainable source of electricity for the building. Additionally, the project will install electric vehicle charging stations in the parking area.
“I thank Governor Hochul and our State officials for seeing the merit in this transformative project,” County Manager Joshua Potosek stated. “We are redefining what this Airport is and can be, and this funding will play a key role in that effort.”
